Sydney Ball was one of trail-blazers of the new generation of painters who emerged in the 1960s in Australia, excelling in large-scale colour-field abstraction.
In late 2015, the ANU Drill Hall Gallery exhibition Birth of the cool celebrated the still under-appreciated art of that era. Among the venerable elders who attended the launch of the exhibition, Sydney Ball’s irrepressible enthusiasm and undiminished commitment to his artistic ideals left an indelible memory of a great man.
