Win a bottle of Clonakilla wine and an Untitled: Elizabeth Newman catalogue by posting an #dhgfoundobject on Instagram before Dec 20!

Elizabeth Newman proposes “painting without painting.” Untitled 2021 (p. 27) was an object that Newman found on the side of the road advertising a clothing sale. Entitled by Newman, the work, literally a sign, now functions as a ‘stand-in’ for painting. Newman has characterised her paradoxical strategy as the ‘re-presentation of representation.’

What if a robust aesthetic experience could be provided by some other object never intended to be a artwork? By appropriating objects from the ‘real’ world, Newman seeks to ‘interrupt the seamless surface’ of painting.

To enter, post a photograph on Instagram of your own found object with the hashtag #dhgfoundobject and make sure you’re following the Drill Hall Gallery Instagram page, @drillhallgallery.

Here’s a couple that the Drill Hall Gallery staff took as an example!

A winner, selected by exhibition curator Tony Oates on December 20, will receive a bottle of Clonakilla wine and an Untitled: Elizabeth Newman catalogue.

Entries may be reposted on Drill Hall Gallery social media and online.
