A sound response to Out of Place by Richard Johnson

On Friday 11 June and Sunday 13 June 2021 in the Drill Hall exhibition Out of Place, Richard Johnson responded to the exhibition Out of Place with an original composition, now available for listening and purchase on his website. This work is a montage of field recordings, textural drones and sounds from the real world inspired by the theme Out of Place. Sources include industrial machinery, working sites, welding, singing air filtering systems, crowds, walking in gravel, stone rubbing, doors, sounds from the opening night of the exhibition and excerpts from the movie Safe (1995). Using unconventional sounds Johnson’s composition teeters between deep harmonics and dissonant imbalance. His work sets an eerie ambiance in which the listener is forced to second guess both content and context. Within the soundscape the profane and everyday become illuminated in most surprising ways.
