Please join us in Sydney for a private tour of the studio of renowned artist Ann Thomson.

Ann Thomson (b.1933) was born in Brisbane but trained in Sydney where she now lives and works. She has been taking up residencies in Paris for 15 years and has recently returned from the capital where she celebrated the publication of her monograph which chronicles 40 years of abstract painting.

Working predominantly in oil or acrylic on linen and in oil-stick and crayon on paper, she has also made series of sculptures gathering together forgotten bits of machinery, corrugated iron, wire and wood into forms that relate to her paintings.

In 1991 she was selected to create a work for the 1992 World Expo in Seville and Australia Felix, her take on an early explorer’s vessel was an impressive example of her skill. In 1977 Thomson’s work was the subject of a major exhibition at the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane and in 1980 a Survey exhibition of the artist’s work was curated by Monash University in Melbourne.

Masks are recommended for this event.

The Drill Hall Gallery acknowledges the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples, the traditional custodians of the Canberra region, and recognises their continuous connection to culture, community and Country.
