John Gillies: Faces on Screen surveys the work of one of Australia’s longest practicing video artists. The exhibition focuses on the cycle and growth of ideas, influenced by the emergence of new technologies and the generative collaborations that have punctuated Gillies’ 40-year career. Faces on Screen revels in the melting pot of Gillies’ multi-faceted practice where sculpture, music, video and installation collide, blurring the boundary between spectator and object. Here, displayed for the first time in a purpose-built train carriage, Gillies’ 2018 film Witkacy & Malinowsky: a cinematic séance in 23 scenes, reveals the power of an all-encompassing cinematic experience.
