Founded in 1996, this year marks the 25th year of operation for Hands On Studio. Over that time, Hands On Studio has become a leader in the field of arts and disabilities in the Canberra region. Hands On has developed a model for a creative community guided by the principle that art is fundamental to human expression and that all people are entitled to its tools of communication. Over the years, the artists who attend the program on a weekly basis have collaborated with their peers as well as local and interstate artists to extend their practice, develop an individual style and foster a sense of community. The ages of the artists who attend the program range from 19-96, a very broad cohort with different life experiences and varying wants, needs, and desires.
Using abstract thought processes, The Town acts as a ‘model’ for a desirable and accessible society. Working as a collective, the artists have used found materials to create utopian spaces unified into a vibrant architectural metropolis. The artists have not used normative structures which mirror our existing society in a subdued manner. Instead, The Town provokes critical thought about the ways in which we may improve society and build strong and vibrant communities that are accessible to all.
While the individual input from artists can be seen throughout the exhibition, the body of work represents a cohesive community expression of art and contemporary life.
Hands On Studio is a visual arts program run by CatholicCare Canberra and Goulburn, and managed by Canberra-based community arts director Tilly Davey.
