The Wandering: Moving images from the MCA Collection is a touring exhibition showcasing the development of digital video imagery in Australian contemporary art. It explores some of the aesthetic possibilities of the medium through single-channel videos by 14 artists in the MCA Collection. The exhibition is built on the idea that it is a ‘wandering’ vessel of artwork and takes its title from Grant Stevens’ featured work. Artworks are projected from a state-of-the-art projection box with high-quality sound, ensuring portability and accessibility.

The Wandering explores a range of themes, artistic styles, voices, actions and performances by artists working across Australia: Vernon Ah Kee, Peter Alwast, Lauren Brincat, Daniel Crooks, Hayden Fowler, Shaun Gladwell, Richard Lewer, Gabriella Mangano and Silvana Mangano, Todd McMillan, Tracey Moffatt, Patricia Piccinini, Grant Stevens, Daniel von Sturmer and Christian Thompson. Their work includes hand-drawn animations, computer-generated imagery, cinematic media and video transferred from 16mm film. United in their mode of presentation, this selection shows that artists today are working in a variety of formats and styles.

The works are visual stories, and operate on a personal, group and cultural level. One recurring theme is the body, with self-portraiture in particular used as a device to explore its dimensions and intricacies. Other themes include time and change: works relate to an ‘other’ world where nature and humans co-exist in a technological, ecological and futuristic environment. The works are contemporary in the most obvious sense, combining text and image and illustrating the impact of computer-generated technology on the genre.
