Simon will discuss parallels and counterpoints between approaches to processes of working with tangible/visual media and intangible/sound based media. Focussing on and expanding the simple idea put forward by Elisabeth Grosz that ‘all that enters our thoughts, firstly enters us via our senses. Regardless of the medium chosen, the foundation of all arts is in the direction of a sensorial experience.

Referring to examples ranging from composers Karlheinz Stockhausen to Wolfgang Rihm; improvising musicians from Ella Fitzgerald to Evan Parker; to visual artists from Jackson Pollock, Ross Manning, Peter Bauhaus, Simon will look at different theories in contemporary arts about the relationship between conscious concept/aims and intuitive/improvisatory process and even chance based progression.
