In collaboration with the Alliance Française of Canberra, the ANU Drill Hall Gallery invites you to a talk by Paul Pickering, specialist historian in social and political sciences.
Come to the Drill Hall Gallery at 6pm, enjoy wine and cheese, and listen to Paul Pickering speaking IN ENGLISH about his article “Plus britannique que la Grande-Bretagne” (“more British than the British”), recently published in the periodical L’Histoire. His talk analyses the ideas and attitudes of Anglo-Australians in relation to the “motherland”. He surveys the period from the 1850s until 1915, when thousands of young Australian men volunteered to serve in the cause of the British Empire. The whys and wherefores of the Anzacs’ engagement in World War I will be examined.
