Jude Rae

Lot 68. Jude Rae (born 1956), SL 268, 2010, AU$ 14,000 – 20,000

The Drill Hall Gallery, attached to the Australian National University in Canberra, has functioned as an art gallery for the last thirty years. Considered one of the most beautiful spaces of its kind, it has maintained a program of high quality exhibitions which have won nationwide recognition. It has been the gallery of choice for many of the country’s leading artists, curators, critics, academics and collectors.

Drill Hall Gallery exhibitions are for the most part unique events accompanied by substantial, well produced publications. The Gallery has made a sterling contribution through the way it has represented contemporary Australian artists over the years. While the National and State galleries have all but relinquished retrospectives and mid-career surveys of living artists, these have always been a specialty of the Drill Hall Gallery. Likewise, thematic surveys and ‘exhibitions of ideas’ are mostly the prerogative of regional and university galleries these days.

As a product of the 1980s, the Gallery urgently requires refurbishment. The replacement of the climate-control system and obsolete gallery lighting will ensure the Gallery remains viable for another thirty years. This auction is raising funds for the refurbishment of the ANU Drill Hall Gallery, with all the works donated by artists and well-wishers.
